For some reason, I have been delving deeply into the history of I Love Lucy, the ultra-popular, ahead-of-its-time television show that originally aired from 1951 to 1957. It was the first to feature a real-life interracial couple on screen, and it set a standard for sitcoms for decades to come. I enjoyed watching it growing up (no, not in the 50s lol) because of the physical comedy and seeing a woman boss hard during a time that women weren’t expected to be a dominant force in the household.
I won’t go into the history, but I would urge you to also do the deep dive if you like stories of trailblazers. I suspect if you're reading this, that pretty much summarizes who you are.
I was listening to an interview this week and took a few clips from it that I think could be inspirational to you as Shopify app developers or your own ‘bossing hard’, while carving out your own destinies in business. You might relate to what Lucille Ball said, no matter what gender you are. A lot of what she said describes the feeling of being an entrepreneur, especially when you are doing something new and uncharted.
Reflecting Back on I Love Lucy

What did you do to make certain that you didn't go off the tracks in this town?
Lucille Ball
“I just kept on working. I had no plan. I had no format for that. I only had a format for my show, and I had great people, and I didn't want to lose them. I kept them working, and we all kept each other working and on our toes. We did the best we could, and we were happy in our work.”
Interviewer
Did you find yourself growing up and growing as a woman while you were doing it?
Lucille Ball
“No, I become more childish and happier. When you're doing bigger-than-life things that are unbelievable, you have to believe, so you're believing unbelievable things, and you have to use a child-like quality daily to get through that and make it.”
Cool, right? I can totally relate to that sentiment. If you’ve spent any time with me, you know I am always trying to have fun and be silly in business settings. I’m a professional, but I’m certainly not the epitome of professionalism.
Okay, now let’s get into this week’s episode, shall we?
