Happy Wednesday!! The weather is PERFECT here in Miami and I hope you’re enjoying this season too.
Today is a paid-for episode but I want to address something I saw today on LinkedIn that is pretty spicy. And by pretty, I am talking habanero level spice. Now, I will not be naming (app) names, so for the sake of making my point, I will talk broadly about the subject.
We all know the competition is heating up in specific app categories. I have worked on some competitive categories myself and know that gaining marketshare drives some apps to make certain decisions. That said, I’m okay with lines being blurred in certain ways such as doing comparisons (tastefully) and things like that. Where the waters get murky for me is going direct on your attack in your marketing messaging by naming the app, and driving home how inferior they are to your app —even using their marketing slogans against them in yours. If you saw what I’m talking about, I would love to know your thoughts on it. I am more of an air on the side of playing nice in the sandbox together as there is enough business for everyone to thrive. Do you agree that it was an effective marketing strategy or do you think it was a little bit of playing dirty?
